If you are thinking of a day out or holiday in Weymouth with your faithful family pet, then you need to find out which beaches allow dogs. Dogs love days out as much as you do, so it is lovely to be able to take them with you. Unfortunately, dogs aren’t welcome everywhere. Here is our list of dog friendly beaches in Weymouth, Portland and the surrounding area in Dorset:
In Weymouth town centre, dogs are allowed on the main Weymouth Beach all year round within designated areas only. There is one sandy dog exercise area near Weymouth Pavilion and one stonier area at the other end of the beach towards Preston (passed Greenhill Groyne). No dogs are permitted on the central section of Weymouth beach between Good Friday and 31st October, although they are allowed outside of these times.
Further along the seafront in the Preston direction is Bowleaze Cove. Dogs are welcome on this beach at all times.
Just east of Weymouth is Ringstead. This is an all-year-round dog friendly beach.
Church Ope beach on Portland, which is linked to Weymouth via a Causeway, also welcomes dogs at all times.
There are also a number of other beaches in the Weymouth and Portland area of Dorset that are privately owned, as opposed to Council run, and these may impose dog walking or other restrictions. You are recommended to check the signage when you arrive, just to be sure they are dog friendly beaches in Weymouth.
